Common Items That Shouldn’t Go Down the Drain

Have you ever been on autopilot in the kitchen, dumped some food down the sink, and then realized that maybe that wasn't the best idea?

It happens to all of us, and many times, we don't even realize that what we put down the drain shouldn't go there!

So what can go in the kitchen sink and what can't? Keep reading to find out!

  • Eggshells Have you ever been making brownies in the kitchen and tossed the eggshells into the sink? Or maybe you were peeling a boiled egg straight over the sink. This is something to avoid, as the garbage disposal can become clogged because of the sharp edges of the eggshells. They'll start to collect other items that come down into the garbage disposal. Putting eggshells in your kitchen sink will lead to clogged drains.

  • Coffee Grounds Coffee grounds may be one of the worst things to put down your kitchen sink. The grounds contribute to oil, grease, and other things in the sink that begin to clog it. Since these things stick to the coffee grounds, your kitchen sink will soon be clogged full of food and other gunk.

  • Bones This item may be a little more self-explanatory as to why you shouldn't put it down your kitchen sink. Since the edges are hard, it can easily damage the drain, which may arguably be worse than a clogged drain.

  • Grease Grease sticks to pipes under your kitchen sink and even the pipes that lead outside and into the streets. Over time, the grease sticking to the pipes will cause clogged drains if you don't have a drain cleaning regularly. Along with grease, other oil-based products like salad dressings, mayonnaise, and cooking oil are bad to put in your kitchen sink.

  • Medication Although medication may not be the culprit for clogging your drain, putting it down a drain can be bad for human and environmental health. How? Once the medicine goes down the sink and through pipes, it is released back into the environment. It may reach the ocean, lakes, rivers, farms, or anywhere else that humans may interact with as well as wildlife. It is best to take medication to a pharmacy to dispose of them.

  • Flour When flour gets wet, it coagulates. This can potentially coat your pipes and clog your drains. It is best to get rid of flour by putting it in your trash can instead of through the garbage disposal.

Avoid Putting These Items in Your Drain

It can be tempting to get rid of some items like coffee grounds or eggshells into the kitchen sink. It's right there, it has a drain, and it seems as though you can get rid of it that way.

But that's just a disaster waiting to happen. Avoiding putting these items in the kitchen sink will save you a headache from clogged drains and broken garbage disposal. If you need a drain cleaning, call the Canessco Kid today for help today!
